2010 Spring Trip

Published by admin

Map at bottom of post.

It’s been a tough winter on all of us. Please don’t opt out of training camp due to lack of miles. You will not be the only one there with no significant outdoor miles. Take advantage of this opportunity to jump start your outdoor training, and get to know your teammates better. If you can’t take the time off work, just come down for Saturday and Sunday. You will not regret it.

Select the spring training package you would like below. If you are not attending the full camp, be sure to inidicate the days that you will be attending.
This year we are using Activ8 to collect the fees for the Spring Training camp. Once you have added your item to the cart, you will be prompted to check out.

Give yourself 2.5-3 hours for the drive down to Whalan.
  • Hwy 52 South, through Rochester, all the way to Fountain, MN. (114 miles from downtown Mpls) – Be sure to stay on 52 after Rochester, NOT I90.
  • Cty 8 East into Lanseboro, MN. (9 miles)
  • Cty 16 East to Whalan, MN. (4.5 miles)
  • Turn left into Whalan and continue straight ahead to cabins and the end of the road.
What is included/provided:
  • Lodging
  • All meals and snacks
  • Sag support during rides (Gatorade and snacks)
  • Bedding
What is NOT provided:
  • Towels
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Clothes washer/dryer
What to bring:
  • Helmet, cycling shoes, stocking cap, gloves, booties.
  • Road bike in excellent working order, with fresh tires. Be sure to do a test ride on your bike prior to camp, especially if you are riding brand new cables, cassette, or chain.
  • Gear recommendations:
    Front: 53/39 or Compact
    Rear: 12/25, 12/26, or 12/27
  • Spare set of wheels with fresh tires.
  • Saddle bag/spare tubes.
  • Tire Pump.
  • All weather cycling clothing (bring everything you’ve got). Weather could vary between 70 deg and sunny, to 40 deg and rainy.
Ride Etiquette:
  • Ride no more than 2 abreast. occasionally single file, as directed by ride leaders.
  • The group will tend to split apart on climbs and approaching sprint signs. We will always regroup.
  • Be exceptionally careful to stay on the right side of the road during climbs and descents. The roads will be quiet, but will occasionally encounter oncoming traffic.
  • Be cautious during sprinting for town signs. Be sure to check over your shoulder before taking the lane. Never cross the middle of the road.
  • Point out obstacles in the road (debris, potholes, etc.) to riders behind you.
  • All rides will start and return via the Root River Trail(http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/state_trails/tra00730.pdf). Cty 16 has no shoulder, and traffic has been unfriendly on that stretch in past years.
  • The sag wagon will always stay behind the last rider, and stays with the longest route.
  • In the case of a flat or mechanical, raise your arm to signal other riders you have a problem, and wait for a safe opportunity to pull off the road. Avoid slamming on your brakes, or making sudden changes in direction. The group will continue, while the sag stops to fix the problem, and bring you back up to rejoin the group. In the case of a flat tire, simply swap with a compatible spare wheel, rather than fixing the flat.
