So here’s a couple tips.

Get you bike tuned up now. Don’t wait until the Monday prior to camp to bring your bike in. That shifter you forgot about over the winter, or that chain, brake pads, or maybe that painful saddle, could take a few day’s to get. Go to the Bicycle Chain and get fixed up.

Gears – ride what you like, but, we do a good chunk of climbing. You will not regret having at least a 25 on your rear cluster. Some will even have a 26 or 27.

Wheels – spare wheels are appreciated. However, if you run a unique set up (i.e. 9 speed, Campy, 23 rims) you should probably bring at least a spare rear if you have one.

One last thing, please don’t anticipate riding a fixie, single speed, mountain bike, or something less then your normal summer road bike. We all love those kinds of rides but they simply can’t logistically be supported.

Thanks Loons

By Chad Macy

Loons, you may be saying, for cripes sakes Chad, it’s only February. While that may be true, training camp is only 6, that’s right SIX, short weeks away. If your a returning attendee there’s a good reason for it. If you’ve never been to camp, make this your year.

Here’s a typical day at camp. We wake up from sleeping in our very modern and private Cabins. The word cabin is used loosely, these really are very nice with 1-2 people per room (your choice), large kitchens, and multiple full bathrooms. Wake up and head over to Scotty for a fresh barista coffee of your liking (mocha please). Then waddle on over to the main cabin for breakfast. Bernie and crew do it up right with pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, oatmeal……., good hearty breakfast food. Then we hop on the bikes and hit the road. The pace is kept in check for the first half of the ride but for a sprint or two. Sag support is provided the whole time, so no need to carry the kitchen sink. We stock it with Gatorade, bars, cookies, and more calorie packed snacks.

By afternoon we’ll have made it to Subway for lunch. The Team provides party subs, and boy do they hit the spot. From that point there are two options, if you’ve had enough or you haven’t had a chance to get much riding in prior to camp, you may elect to head back. The route back is scenic and takes place on a paved bike trail, all in your day will total about 40 miles. The other option will be to go long. Going long means more climbing and a little brisker pace. Don’t be worried though. We always need sag drivers and if it’s just not your day to ride you can drive. Subway is in a valley, so the long ride starts with a climb and goes from there. By the time we get back to camp you’ll be looking at around about +/- something near 100 miles. I’ll be honest, if your the type of person that can’t rest without two zeros on your computer, you may need to get a little extra on your own.

Once back at camp you can clean up in a warm shower and head back to the main cabin for Dinner. I’ve never been disappointed at dinner, we’ve had Chicken, pasta, salads, sausage, lasagna, and even steak, which is a tradition and is served every year on Saturday night. You’ll be fully refueled and ready for the next day’s ride. Last year we topped all other previous camps and it’ll happen again this year. After finishing your ride and sometime around dinner (don’t worry you get plenty of time to eat), there is an opportunity to work out the day’s kinks, knots, and soreness by getting a massage from either Larry or Sophie from The Fix Studio. This may have been the highlight from last year, and it was worth every penny.

After all of this we generally settle into comfort in front of the TV and watch a movie, have a beverage, and sneak off to bed hoping no one notices because it starts all over again the next day.

This really is a great time and does wonders for your fitness. We have done all the hard work to get the trip ready, all you have to do is show up with your stuff.

Take a look at the attachment for more details. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Cheers,

Chad

Dear LSC members:

In case you missed the posting on the Loon State Google-Group, here’s the 2009 Race Fee Reimbursement information. I’ve extended the deadline until March 13th

I hope that your 2009 race season was successful and you’re enjoying a restful off-season. I’m pleased to inform you that LSC is again able to offer race fee reimbursement to eligible LSC members for the 2009 race season. Race fee reimbursement is one of the many benefits of membership in the Loon State Cyclists; it is made possible because of the great volunteer support of team races events throughout the year. If you wish to claim race fee reimbursement for 2009, please follow the instructions below to complete the attached form.

Best of luck in 2010!
